MOVE AROUND TAIWAN

Transport

A practical guide to airports, THSR, TRA, MRT, buses and transit cards.

AIRPORT

Taoyuan International Airport ↔ Taipei

Airport MRT is the main direct rail link between Taoyuan International Airport and central Taipei. Compare express/local service with buses or taxis based on your hotel and arrival time.

  • Airport MRT connects the airport with the Taipei Main Station area
  • Check express vs. commuter service
  • Leave enough airport-arrival buffer on departure day

THSR

Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR)

THSR is the fastest intercity option along Taiwan’s western corridor, linking Taipei-area stations with Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung, Chiayi, Tainan and Zuoying (Kaohsiung).

  • Connects 12 major stations on the west side
  • Best for longer intercity trips
  • Some THSR stations require a local transfer to the city center

TRA

Taiwan Railway (TRA)

TRA serves both western and eastern main lines and many regional branches. It is especially important for Hualien, Taitung and local rail trips.

  • Core rail option for Hualien and Taitung
  • Some sections accept transit cards
  • Reserve assigned-seat trains early for busy periods

MRT

Taipei, Taoyuan and Kaohsiung MRT

Urban MRT is the easiest backbone for many city trips: Taipei attractions, Taoyuan Airport connections and Kaohsiung’s port/center are each covered by their local systems.

  • Strong coverage for major Taipei sights
  • Taoyuan Airport MRT links airport and metro area
  • Kaohsiung works well with MRT plus light rail

BIKE

YouBike and cycling

Public bikes are useful for short city hops in places such as Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung; riverside and lakeside paths can also be attractions themselves.

  • Good for short urban connections
  • Check weather and bike-lane conditions
  • Follow pedestrian and road-safety rules

TAXI

Taxi, rental car and island transport

Mountain, coastal and offshore areas can have long transit gaps. Taxis, rental cars or local tours may be more efficient, while Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu depend on flights and ferries.

  • Allow extra time in mountain and coastal areas
  • Check local licence and insurance requirements before renting
  • Build weather disruption into island flight/ferry plans
